hermit crab - chumbe island, zanzibar

  1. who knew that hermit crabs had such personality? they're pretty funny. there are thousands all over chumbe. you don't see the crab itself as much as the shell. so it looks like there are all these shells just moving around the ground with minds of their own.

    this is from an afternoon forest walk which always gives me some of my favorite light. lots of contrast with lit objects against dark backgrounds. i think another thing that makes under-the-canopy forest light different is that the spaces in the leaves act as little lenses that give a soft quality to the shadows. here is an example of what i'm talking about.
