lalibela priest - ethiopia

lalibela priest ethiopia phil philip bowen photo photographer kampala uganda

  1. this is a testament to good light. photo is straight from the camera, no nothing done to it.

i had seen some photos of lalibela on flickr etc. when i was travel planning our ethiopia trip and figuring out what to do with our week. there was a photo of this same priest that i loved and i'm sure it played a roll in the decision to head there.

the churches of lalibela are carved from stone such that the top of the church is at ground level and everything is excavated below. the whole complex is a world heritage site and some of the churches now have covers erected over them to prevent erosion damage.

so the light in the churches comes from indirect sources and through deep windows. adds lots of drama.

this is probably one of my favorite pictures from the whole trip, not necessarily because it's the best, but because i had it in my mind the whole time and when the moment presented itself to get it, i didn't screw up.

  2. what a beautiful story of a photo's origins and its meaning to you. it made my day to have seen it.
