self portrait with new DIY ring flash

  1. i spent the whole day making a ring flash out of mirrors, cereal boxes, aluminum foil and packing tape.

here is the absolutely first photo i took with it. heavily sharpened in photoshop, which made my eyebrows dark and melted my irises in to my pupils. if you look close at the highlight in my eyes, you can see the ring. you can also see that the top of the ring is a little thicker than the bottom.

that's the difficult thing about do-it-yourself ring flashes: it's hard to get even illumination all the way around the ring. that's why you pay $300 for the real adapter. or $500 for the real ring flash. the one day and $10 in materials works for me for now, though.
